چکیده

In order to understand the hydrological impacts of nature-based solutions in Cantareira Water Supply System, this study evaluates six different land cover and use change scenarios. The first second consider restoration native vegetation riparian areas, third prioritizes sites using biophysical characteristics (optimized scenario derived from Resource Investment Optimization System—RIOS), fourth considers best management practices fifth sixth are hypothetical extreme scenarios converting all pasture forest vice versa. Two models were developed represent distributions water yields watershed: HEC-HMS SWAT. Simulation results indicate that when implemented, surface runoff is reduced ambient storage increases during rainy season (December–March); while overall flow dry (June–September). combination specific hydrologic components RIOS-customized intervention simulation outputs—namely flows groundwater contribution stream flows—indicate on average 33% increase yield, or 206 hm3/year, across watershed comparing against baseline conditions. same modeling scenario, sub-watersheds adjacent reservoirs showed an 58% (or 341 hm3/year). adopting NbS source can mitigate drought conditions contribute toward building long-term security.

Hantaviruses in São Paulo State, Brazil

To the Editor: Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is an emerging health problem in Brazil. This syndrome was first reported in 1993 in three persons living in a rural area of Juquitiba County; two of them died of acute respiratory failure (1). Although Juquitiba County is part of the metropolitan area of greater São Paulo City, patients lived in a recently deforested region. From 1993 through ...

Seven years of external control of fluoride levels in the public water supply in Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil

UNLABELLED Fluoridation of the public water supplies is recognized as among the top ten public health achievements of the twentieth century. However, the positive aspects of this measure depend on the maintenance of fluoride concentrations within adequate levels. OBJECTIVE To report the results of seven years of external control of the fluoride (F) concentrations in the public water supply in...

Catastrophic Regime Shift in Water Reservoirs and São Paulo Water Supply Crisis

The relation between rainfall and water accumulated in reservoirs comprises nonlinear feedbacks. Here we show that they may generate alternative equilibrium regimes, one of high water-volume, the other of low water-volume. Reservoirs can be seen as socio-environmental systems at risk of regime shifts, characteristic of tipping point transitions. We analyze data from stored water, rainfall, and ...

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...
